Visakhapatnam: Seven-time champions Australia exposed the chinks in India’s armour during their three-wicket win over the hosts in the women’s World Cup match at the ACA-VDCA Stadium on Sunday.
India’s lack of a sixth bowling option was thoroughly exploited by the Australians as they chased down 331/7, setting a new World Cup record for the highest successful chase. Pacers Kranti Gaud and Amanjot Kaur’s lack of big-match experience was evident, leaving skipper Harmanpreet Kaur with few options as Alyssa Healy dominated the innings.
If South African all-rounder Nadine De Klerk had exploited Kranti and Amanjot to seal a dramatic three-wicket victory on Thursday, on Sunday, Healy hit Kranti for 19 runs in the eighth over, while Phoebe Litchfield struck Amanjot for four boundaries in the 10th over to steer Australia home. Kranti conceded 73 runs in nine overs, and Amanjot leaked 68 in her nine overs.
Coach Amol Muzumdar acknowledged the need to rethink India’s strategy. “After this game, we’ll have a look at it (five-bowler theory) and I’m sure the team management will have a proper discussion. We’ll take the right call as we approach the next game. I’m sure about it,” he said.
However, Harmanpreet is keen to retain the same combination. “We’ll sit and discuss (five-bowler strategy) because this combination has given us a lot of success in the past. Two bad games are not going to make a big difference for us. Going forward, there are a lot of things we need to sort out, and hopefully we’ll come up with the best approach,” she said.
While Amanjot has 12 WODIs under her belt, Kranti has played 11. Both are making their Women’s World Cup debut, and nerves contributed to the defeats. India also have experienced options like Renuka Singh , Arundhati Reddy , and left-arm spinner Radha Yadav on the bench.
Healy acknowledged Australia’s plan to capitalise on the inexperienced pacers after local girl Sree Charani contained the batters. “I think Charani was getting quite a bit of spin. She was actually the pick of the bowlers. We thought if we could capitalise on the pace bowlers, that would be handy knowing they’ve only got five bowlers in their attack,” she said.
Muzumdar added that India’s batting collapse at the back end cost them 30-odd runs. “The finish is very important. Yes, we need a good start, but we need a better finish. If you see the South Africa game, in the last five overs we ended up losing that game,” he said.
