NEW DELHI: A blast occurred in a parked car near the Red Fort on Monday evening, prompting authorities to rush five fire tenders to the spot, officials said. At least eight people were killed and 24 injured in the blast.
Videos shared from the spot showed panic as people rushed to safety.

According to the Delhi Fire Services, a call was received about an explosion near the Lal Qila Metro Station. "Nearby vehicles were also affected," an official told PTI.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said, “Today at around 6.52 pm, a slow-moving vehicle stopped at the red light. An explosion happened in that vehicle, and due to the explosion, nearby vehicles were also damaged. All agencies—FSL, NIA—are here. Some people have died, and some have been injured. The situation is being monitored. The Home Minister has also called us, and information is being shared with him from time to time.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have taken stock of the situation, sources said, as a high alert was sounded across the city. The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined. “As of now, I can’t tell you anything. Investigation is being done,” a Delhi Police official told ANI.
The area has been cordoned off.
