Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], October 25 (ANI): Leader of Opposition in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Sunil Sharma termed National Conference's defeat in one Rajya Sabha seat a "big defeat for Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah's ideology."
Sunil Sharma's remark came after J-K BJP President Sat Sharma won with 32 votes, leaving NC's Imran Nabi Dar with 22 votes.
However, the ruling Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) won three Rajya Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) on Friday.
Hailing the BJP's victory, Sunil Sharma said, "It is a big victory of transparency. The way Omar Abdullah tried to consolidate votes on religious and regional lines, in the name of a particular community, is a big defeat of his ideology."
"The Abdullah family is very clever, and they have enslaved the people of J-K for the last three generations. They never seek votes in the name of infrastructure and development, but in the name of religion, caste, separatism, terrorism, and stone pelters," he added.
Earlier, BJP President Sat Sharma expressed gratitude to the top party leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for his candidature.
Sharma told reporters, "Everyone has supported the BJP. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah ji, and BJP National President JP Nadda ji for my candidature for this Rajya Sabha seat. We have 28 members, but four others supported us by listening to their inner voices. Was it wrong on the part of four members to listen to their inner voice?"
All four Rajya Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir have been vacant since February 2021, following the retirement of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mir Mohammad Fayaz, Shamsher Singh, and Nazir Ahmed Laway.
Meanwhile, bypolls for the Nagrota and Budgam assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled for November 11, following the demise of MLA Devender Singh Rana and Omar Abdullah's resignation, respectively. (ANI)
